HOLIDAY DETECTOR
INTRODUCTION
The term "Holiday" dates back to the days of the great wooden sailing ships. During the long slow voyages, ship maintenance was a must. One of the most important duties was that of the mast sealer. A sailor would seal the mast of the ship with tar to prevent the wood from rotting. If the sailor missed coating an area of the mast the wood would rot. It was said, the sailor must have taken a Holiday at that point thus not achieving a good coat of tar on the mast. Later as steel replaced wood, paint replaced tar. However, holidays live on. Holidays also known as pinholes void discontinuities.
Holiday Detector is an instrument used to detect holes in anti- corrosive coating (electrically insulated) on metallic pipes/surfaces. This test is carried before the pipes are laid underground.
The pipe is connected to earth (nominal) and an electrode, charged to high tension, is moved over the coating. At the place of a hole, arcing takes place and the instrument gives alarm.
The instrument consists of an electronic oscillator to convert small DC Voltage (12 V) to AC. A high voltage rectifier to give high tension DC output.
SPARK TESTER
A fixed 40KV stationary A/C Spark Tester is used to detect Pinhole, Puncture & Blank portion in thick (1mm to 10 mm) insulating coating (like FRP Lining, Glass Lining, Rubber Lining, Teflon Coating, P. U. Coating, Cement Coating etc...) on conductive material.
PIN HOLE DETECTOR
The Low Voltage Holiday Detector or Pinhole Detector is used for testing insulation coatings less than 500μm (20mils) thick on conductive substrates, and is ideal for powder coatings and other applications. This method detects pinholes that go directly to the bare substrate, aiding in deciding factor for coating over pin holes to reduce corrosion due to moisture and environmental effects.

HOLIDAY DETECTOR
The High Voltage or Holiday Detection method is where a high voltage current is applied to a probe, which is passed over the coated surface.
The voltage used is dependent on the dielectric strength and thickness of the coating being tested, but typically the voltage should be high enough so that in areas where the coating is electrically weaker due to a flaw, there is sufficient voltage to breakdown the gap between the probe and the substrate. When this breakdown occurs, the current flows through the substrate, and back into the unit via a grounding cable, setting off an alarm to signal a flaw has been detected.
This allows you to detect flaws that don't go all the way down to the substrate, as well as voids within the coating.
However, it is vital that the voltage isn’t set too high, as this could breakdown and damage the coating, causing the unit to alarm when there are no flaws, and creating a flaw in the process. Testing with bright blue sparks is a clear sign the voltage is too high.
