Introduction
The most common procedure of determining coating hardness is the pencil hardness test, also called the Wolff Wilborn method.
Wooden pencils of different grades are sharpened using a cutter to achieve roughly 5-6 mm long bare tip. The tip is then rubbed by placing the pencil vertically at an angle of 90° on abrasive 400 Grit Paper, so as to make the tip end correctly flat, smooth and chip defect free.
The flattened tip pencils are then inserted individually into the Pencil Hardness Tester and moved over the coating only to scratch it at different levels.
After the test is performed, visual inspection is done and the Coating Hardness Grade is decided.
